Suppose you’re learning about gravity.
You could simply memorise:
“Gravity is the force that attracts objects towards one another.”
Or you could ask:
- Why does gravity exist?
- Why don’t we float away from Earth?
- Does the Moon have gravity?
- Would I weigh the same on the Moon?
- What would happen if Earth had twice as much gravity?
Suddenly, one definition has become an entire learning journey.
That’s the power of a good question.
Questions make your brain search for connections, explanations, evidence, and possibilities.
Questions Turn Information Into Understanding
Memorisation helps you remember information.
Questions help you understand it.
Imagine a student memorises that plants need sunlight. Another student asks:
“Why do plants need sunlight?”
This question leads to photosynthesis, chlorophyll, energy, carbon dioxide, glucose, and oxygen.
One question can open the door to an entire concept.
This is why curious students often develop a deeper understanding of what they learn.
Questions Improve Critical Thinking
Not every answer you hear is automatically correct.
When you develop the habit of questioning information, you begin to ask:
- What is the evidence?
- How do we know this?
- Is there another explanation?

Here’s a simple activity you can try today.
Start with a problem:
“My plant isn’t growing well.”
Now ask “Why?” repeatedly.
Why isn’t it growing?
Maybe it isn’t getting enough sunlight.
Why isn’t it getting enough sunlight?
Because it is kept in a dark corner.
Why is it kept there?
Because there isn’t enough space near the window.
Continue asking “Why?” until you reach a deeper cause.
This technique teaches you to look beyond the obvious answer and identify the root of a problem.
Don’t Be Afraid of “Silly” Questions

One of the biggest barriers to curiosity is the fear of asking a question that sounds silly.
But think about it:
How can you know whether a question is silly if you haven’t explored it?
Many questions that seem simple can lead to fascinating discoveries.
Instead of worrying about what others think, try asking:
“What am I genuinely curious about?”

Question:

Prediction:

Experiment:
Use water at different temperatures and compare the time taken for the sugar to dissolve.
Observation:
Record what happens.
Conclusion:
Compare the result with your prediction.
This is essentially scientific thinking in action:
Question → Prediction → Experiment → Observation → Conclusion
How Parents Can Encourage Questions
Parents don’t need to know every answer.
In fact, sometimes the best response to a child’s question is:
“That’s interesting. How could we find out?”
Instead of immediately providing the answer, encourage children to:
- Think of possible explanations.
- Search reliable sources.
- Perform simple observations.
- Discuss their ideas.
- Test their predictions.
This teaches children that learning isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about knowing how to find them.

Try this simple Question Challenge for one week.
Every day, write down:
1 new “Why?” question
1 new “How?” question
1 new “What if?” question
For example:
Why? Why does the Moon appear to change shape?
How? How do birds know where to migrate?
What if? What would happen if Earth had no atmosphere?
At the end of the week, choose one question and investigate it.
You may be surprised by where your curiosity takes you.
